We altered and extended a mid-twentieth century semi-detached property in southwest Harrogate to improve the entrance and circulation areas and to create a new master bedroom and en-suite bathroom at attic level.

The key design move was to position the upper level staircase so that no useable floor area was lost from the first floor bedrooms. A new glazed roof area at the head of the stair enables natural light to penetrate the storeys below, improving the openness and airiness of the original house.

Bold colours were used to identify the existing building fabric and the newly inserted stair volume, with openings highlighted in a sunshine yellow.​
