burnley housing

We undertook a feasibility study for a 20 acre housing allocation site in Lancashire, creating a masterplan for the future development of 166 homes. This focused on integrating the development site into its surrounding street and road network to create a permeable, pedestrian and cycle friendly, extension to the local neighbourhood.

We employed an ‘eyes on the street’ approach in the placement and orientation of dwellings to foster natural surveillance of public spaces, and worked with the existing topography and natural features of the landscape to introduce a sustainable urban drainage system using open rills, dry ponds and a focal wildlife pond.

Landscape features and a pattern language of village forms – a village green, spatial hierarchies of main street and back lanes, clustered tree planting and landmark trees – help to create a sense of place and to promote a legible and visually coherent new neighbourhood design.
